Does a Breakup mean time for a change-up?

Written by:

Different people cope with change in different ways. So when someone goes through a breakup, he or she might deal with it differently. For some this looks like incorporating more time with family or friends, but for others this might look like a “villain ark”.

What really is a villain ark? This term describes the process someone goes through following a breakup in which they focus a lot of attention on self improvement usually in the form of fitness. If someone is in his or her “villain ark” the biggest tell tale sign is a dedicated attendance to the gym.

“I think the break up really just serves as extra motivation to improve,” Maria Sideris.

If this means hitting the gym, then so be it. But as mentioned above, not everyone deals with situations the same way. Although it is more common for girls, sometimes a teen will chop his or her hair off or even dye it altogether. But why is there this external motivation to change following a harsh breakup?

Emma Myers, sophomore at Highland High School, when asked about why people change following a break up claimed, “I think it is just a way of letting go and moving on”.

She makes a solid point. Even though the term “villain ark” may carry a certain connotation it really is just a time in which a person may have certain factors pressing him or her to change. Similar to why someone is motivated to change his or her style completely. Instead of saying someone is in his or her “villain ark” people could refer to it as a “self-improvement lifestyle change”, but what is the fun in that? A villain ark is nothing more than a time following hardship in which someone dedicates themselves to making change. Considering all the other things that kids do to avoid facing reality, this is truly a safe and responsible outlet.
